Surround Me With Love

Pure CountryThe year was 1981. Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the 40th President of the United States. MTV was born, forever altering the attention span of teenagers. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Chariots of Fire” were two of the big movies that year. And I was finishing up my freshman year at Texas A&M University (WHOOP!).

In February, I met and fell in love with a blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty named Susan Moore (you can read the full story here). She was a junior at Round Rock High School, and I was a freshman at Texas A&M, about two hours away. So we dated long distance.

There was a country singer named Charly McClain who released a song in 1981 entitled “Surround Me With Love”, a beautiful, simple love ballad. Susan heard the song on the radio and really liked it because it reminded her of us. She told me about the song, and I listened to it and liked it as much as she did; so it became our song.

When we married in October 1982, a dear friend – Melanie Pledger – sang the song for us at our wedding.

Naturally, it has a spot on my list of all-time favorite songs.
